About our name:
"Weka" from the historic Weka Pass entry to the Amuri Basin from the south. This picturesque river valley runs through limestone formations
dating from more than 500 years ago and was the site of early Maori occupation. The pass was used in the early 1860's by the first gold miners heading for the West Coast and later by wagons bringing out the first Amuri wool clip.
"A" for the Amuri Basin. The name Amuri is taken from the Maori name Haumuri and appears to have at least two meanings:
1] The country that is so different
2] The Land of the Shining Tussock
About Wekas:
The Weka, or woodhen, can be both inquisitive and shy, or cheeky and sometimes annoying as they can damage crops and steal things. They are members of the rail family which are mainly aquatic birds, and are capable of swimming well, but are flightless.
Weka parents forage for food for their family in a New Zealand high country lake
Above photo courtesy of Donald Lousley
In spite of being cooked and eaten by both Maori and the Pakeha settlers, the species seemed well able to resist the advent of man for awhile in New Zealand's early history, but now for many years are endangered in many areas, probably due to predators such as rats eating their eggs. Although an adult Weka is more than a match for stoat, they're at risk from dogs. They can raise up to four chicks a year and breed all year round if conditions are suitable.
The diet of the Weka in forests is predominantly invertebrates, fruits, lizards, snails and the eggs and young of birds. They also readily kill mice, rats and young rabbits.

More about Amuri History:
The Maori moved through the Amuri Basin to the north, south, east and west but there is very little evidence to suggest that they actually settled here for any length of time.
The Amuri Basin has undergone many changes since Edward Lee and Edward Jollie drove a mob of sheep from the Wairau in the north to the Amuri Plains thus
discovering Jollies Pass near Hanmer Springs.
Where once thousands of sheep grazed - many of the larger sheep runs have been divided and dairy farms helped by irrigation have taken their place.
Tourism and viticulture are now making an impact on the area
from Waipara to Hanmer Springs.

A NEW GARDEN SEAT IN THE HURUNUI
We have been delighted with the number of people who like our Macrocarpa Garden Furniture.
We are also featured in the 'homestyle' magazine this month - June/July issue page 102 - 105.
It is amazing how the furniture looks in different settings - so we will endeavour to show them to you.

This seat is placed in a conversation area - as you can see - good use has been made of the stones from the area. Stone fences have become very popular - we think they look stunning!!

A close up view of the garden seat - doesn't the Weka.A brand look great on the top right hand side!
Roll on summer! - we certainly can't complain about the weather - it's very mild for this time of the year.

This photo was taken from inside the restaurant looking out the right hand side of the building and shows more of the furniture designed for Cafe Izone.

A view of the dining area inside -the outside wall is mainly glass allowing people to appreciate the amazing
Canterbury landscape.
We haven't had an evening meal at the Cafe Izone Restaurant yet. It's on our "to do list" but the coffee and muffins are great.
So many people have commented to us on the evening meals that I can't wait to get there!
The other positive for us is the orders that have come in from people seeing the furniture and wanting to order!!

WEKA.A ARE DELIGHTED TO SUPPORT THE GARDEN TO TABLE CHARITABLE TRUST
The Garden to Table Trust promotes edible gardens in Kiwi schools.
www.gardentotable.org.nz
The trust recognises a wide concern that basic "life skills" are not being taught at home, that many children are disconnected from their food supply,do not recognise common vegetables and know little or nothing about where food comes from.
One of their worthy goals is to lobby for the inclusion of the Garden to Table programme in all New Zealand State Primary Schools.
On October 28th the Garden to Table are holding two fund raising events.Australian celebrity cook and kitchen gardening guru Stephanie Alexander visits New Zealand to help raise funds for the trust.
A lunch event will be held at the Langham Hotel and at night a charity gala and auction at St Matthew-in the-City,187 Federal St ,Auckland.Go to
www.gardentotable.org.nz for more detail and to order tickets.
Weka.A are donating one of their "A.garden" planter box and seedling trays for the auction.
Well designed and sturdily constructed in New Zealand Macrocarpa these are something that all gardeners will treasure - the young and the more mature!

WEKA.A NOW AT SHOW HOME IN CHRISTCHURCH
On Friday 3rd September Murray set up a display at a Show Home in Christchurch - that's right the day before the earthquake! The Show Home is on the corner of Goulding and State Highway 1,and well worth a visit.

Display of Weka.A Outdoor Table and benches on deck.
It was a terrible day - wet and cold and then of course the earthquake struck the next morning. The house wasn't damaged but I understand that some of the house fittings were.
